June 17, 2012 Prosperity Gospel

Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

One of the most widely-spread and fastest growing heresies is the so-called Prosperity Gospel, the Gospel of Health and Wealth. It seems so “politically correct” in our materialistic society. And like Satan himself, those who preach this false doctrine even quote Scripture to buttress their errors. As we will see, this is absolutely the contrary of what Christ, the Apostles and the Church Fathers have taught.

Wealth … is like a snake; it will twist around the hand and bite unless one knows how to use it properly. – Clement of Alexandria

Blessed are you who are poor, for yours in the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who hunger now, for you shall be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh. – Luke 6:20-21

But woe to you who are rich, for you are receiving your comfort already. – Luke 6:24

He has put down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich He has sent empty away. – Holy Virgin Mary, in Luke 1:52-53

Property is theft. – Saint Basil the Great

When we attend to the needs of those in want, we give them what is theirs, not ours. More than performing works of mercy, we are paying a debt of justice.  – Saint Gregory the Great

I am criticized often for my continual attacks on the rich. Yes: because the rich continually attack the poor. – Saint John Chrysostom

The price of the Kingdom is the food you give to those who need it. – Pope Saint Leo the Great
